How did the Squirrel Saver Club begin?
Since the opening of the Yorkshire Building Society Agency in our offices last year, we have been looking at various ways in which to integrate the Society into the local community.
One such way is with our Squirrel Saver Club which was developed to target our younger customers - the future generation of savers - and really try to stress the importance of saving for the future. We wanted to make the idea of saving fun and wanted a mascot that would, in time, become a well known character locally. Then, one day in March, last year, a squirrel walked into the office and we decided the idea of a Squirrel gathering nuts for the winter was the perfect analogy to illustrate the importance of saving for a rainy day.
Following a 'Name the Squirrrel' competition in the local schools in Marske, we finally had a name for our new furry friend - Red the Squirrel.
The most distinguished member of the Squirrel Saver Club so far, is HRH The Prince of Wales.
How do I become a member of the Squirrel Saver Club?
Children will automatically become a member of the Squirrel Saver Club when a Yorkshire Building Society One Day Account is opened at the Marske-by-the-Sea agency.
The One Day Account's interest rate is currently 1.74% (gross) and is a passbook account (so that children can see their savings adding up on the page). Please call us or drop in for full account opening information. Alternatively, click here

"Red" the Squirrel in the Community
"Red" is fast becoming a "Legend" in the community, and really loves living in Marske-by-the-Sea and is often spotted out and about in the village, at most of the communities charity and sporting events:
"Red" has visited a number of schools, including Normanby Primary School in order to teach the children about the importance of saving money for the future. Has "Red" visited your school yet?
Were you at the Christmas Festival - did you spot Red the Squirrel on the christmas float with Santa?

Heres some pictures of him and the Pupils of Westgarth Primary School marching down after the float!
Did you see "Red" the Squirrel giving out Eggs at Easter and Flags on St Georges Day?
"Red" is a big Sports fan and supports all his local teams - Marske United, Marske Cricket Club, Redcar Rugby Union Football Club, Redcar Town Junior Football Club! Prehaps you saw "Red" at the Nat West Cricket force weekend ?
"Red" the Squirrel supports the Save Our Squirrels/Squirrels Charity - Prince Charles
"Red" the Squirrel also believes in supporting our local charities. Here he is donating a cheque to the Teesside Hospice and S.A.R.A. - the animal rescue association in Saltburn.

Aswell as teaching the younger generation the importance of saving! "Red" is also trying to raise awareness of red squirrels within the country as sadly, they are at risk. It is thought that without action red squirrels will be extinct in England within a deccade and will no longer exist in th UK within a generation!
In order to help inform people "Red" has visited a number of primary schools in the area discussing the issue and will be visiting more soon! On top of this we have recentally been in touch with 'Red Squirrel Survival Trust' promoting the organisation in our newsletter and on facebook!
